En Joy

Image
Above is the I-Ching Hexagram for joy.  A poet friend of mine, Ernesto Mercer, shared on social media that we should be mindful of the joy Black Panther and Wakanda has produced for members of the black community and African Diaspora. I've been meditating on joy lately. In the I-Ching, joy is also linked to pleasure.  In my studies, I have often connected with the idea of joy as pleasure that is shared with those of like minds.  We must have joy in our lives; and we must have folks of like minds that we can share our thoughts and feelings with. I have also thought quite a bit about how impenetrable joy is.  Joy is meant to be shared, not attacked or critiqued.  When we find people with joy, we leave them alone.  If one feels negative in the presence of joy, one must find someone else to discuss the unjoy with. Transcendence as a blog rises up out of my studies of African American history and culture.  There in the black we often struggle wi...

Hexagram #37

Image
It is racial cliche to talk about the Black Family. The romantic relationships turned to responsibility turn to battleground and cage. No doubt there are the beautiful women and men who have developed and nurtured "healthy" relationships for many years and serve as role models for us all, but I think the majority of them stay away from public professions of their love. They know the humility a serious relationship with one person produces. To love someone is to gain sense of who you truly are in both your beauty and ugliness. In your beauty you find your power and strength to assist, aid, endure, and promote. In your ugliness you learn that the world is bigger even than your flaws, shortcomings, and periods of hopelessness. In the Chinese Book of Wisdom the I-Ching hexegram #37 corresponds to household. The judgement reads perserverance of the woman furthers. The difficulty in applying this to contemporary society, esepcially within intellectual communities is diffic...

Report From the Field#1- Notes on the Linear from the Heart of a Taiji Practice

Image
One benefit of Taiji is its ability to provide you with a sense of circular energy and how, given the physical structure of the body, that circular energy can be used to direct ones movements. My meditation here is on how Taiji helps one transcend linear thinking through practice. Linear thinking is an abstract concept; and in that way is in operation in countless activities. For many of us, metaphorically walking in a straight line represents a linear movement. However, how our physical structure generates that energy may not be. The goal here is to not give answers, which too is an expression of the linear with an answer representing some final destination. As one continues to study Taiji one discovers how linear thinking in the body actually provides a cap to certain forms of awareness. Though we imagine linear thinking is not best and may discuss wholeness or holistic health, one question is where and how do we practice this? Within Taiji the field of practi...

Supermoon

Image
Last night I was standing on the deck when I discovered the super moon coming through the trees.  It was right on the edge of the horizon, with black leaves covering parts of its edges.  Just rising.  I said, “ Boo!”, I call my wife Boo sometimes.  “Come upstairs! You gotta see this.”   She came after a few minutes, then monotone said, “ Oh yeah.  The Supermoon.”  We stared for about thirty seconds.  Then she headed back downstairs.   Later I could smell stage in the house.   Went to pick...

The Positive and the Negative

Image
All people love the positive, and the people I know are no different. Of course we have our wars and our violent crimes, and our crime T.V. shows, but we also have our Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We have our parties, get out, get into, and get it in.  We the believers in the good not bad the bad bad that is good the bad bad not good.  We believe in freedom.   We believe in law.   We do believe somethings must be stopped.  We believe somethings should go on forever.  Trauma, life, blues, joy, pain, and sadness.   We all swim through it.   Some of us float,  Some of us go down deep.   Some of the people who are mad are really mad.  Some of the mad people are mad cuz they positive.  Some people are mad publicly because they can't be positive.  There's something very positive about Making America Great Again.  Many of you will deny ...

China #1 The Notebook

Image
The riddle of the day is the officers without guns. Their uniforms don't seem as tight as in the States. I can't make out the meaning of the insignias pasted on their chest and look more at the faces. Each has its own geometry. Some of them what I imagine to be Chinese and others that seem more Latino. There is a seriousness about it all that is heightened by the constant chants over the loudspeakers with instructions I cannot decipher. Each message thumps a drum in me whose song reminds me I am not in the place I've known as home. Back there I know the rituals of security and safety and better understand how and when I should be afraid. I am a dislocated limb here. There is concern, maybe even fear, but I don't know what the work of fear is and where to place it. Back home, the chests of the officers bulge more. Here they are skinny and flat. Here some of the shirts are loose. Here there is a ritual about the clothing that fits in with the all too com...
